Following the crossing of the inner German border by the families Strelzyk and Wetzel from the GDR to West Germany in the summer of 1979. Desperate to leave the GDR, they flee in a homemade hot-air balloon.

An amazing true story, told with grace and honesty by Herbig, shedding light on recent German history and the repercussions of splitting a country with a border wall…. Not only a film for history buffs, but a contemporary look at family unity and the desperation to find a better life by going to extremes.
